Death Of Vaclav Talich At 78
Vaclav Talich, the famous Czech conductor and musicologist, died on March 15 at the age of 78 in Beroun, near Prague, after a prolonged illness.
Talich was the director of the opera of the City Theatre in Pilsen, head of the Czech Philharmonic, director of the opera of the National Theatre in Prague, professor of conducting at the Prague Conservatory, chief conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava, where he also taught at the College of Music and Dramatic Arts, artistic consultant of the Czechoslovak Radio, and artistic consultant of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He had been in retirement in Beroun because of ill health for the last few years. In 1957, the President of Czechoslovakia conferred on him the title of National Artist in recognition of his work. He was known particularly for his authentic interpretations of the music of his compatriots. Dvorak and Smetana.
