Huxley's Home Gutted

May 14 Firemen aided by “waterbombing” aircraft yesterday succeeded in controlling a 1200-acre forest fire in the Hollywood Hills which destroyed or damaged 24 homes; One of the houses that was gutted belonged to the author Aldous Huxley Friends had to stop him from entering bis blazing home on Friday night in an effort to rescue priceless manuscripts and research material. United Press International said. The writer, who later took refuge with friends, told reporters that he had only managed to rescue a few manuscripts. including that of his latest work. “Island" All his other possessions were lost in the flames. Some houses—many valued at between 30000 dollars and 100.000 dollars—were only damaged by the blaze, which swept over the tree-covered hills, fanned by a 40-mile an hour wind.
