KATANGA FORCES
“Foreigners Mav Go”
(N Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) ELISABETHVILLE, May 13. All foreign soldiers serving with the Katanga forces could break their contracts and return home if they wished, a Katanga spokesman said last night. Observers expect the bulk of the 200 South African, British and Rhodesian troops who engaged to fight for President Tshombe’s Army at a promised £2OO a month to take the opportunity. Only one thing may hold them—back pay There have been complaints that Katanga has been slow to pay their wages in hard currency to their home towns
The offer apparently does not apply to about 500 Belgian soldiers with the Katanga forces. Since the abortive attack on Kabalo in north Katanga last month, the South Africans and Britons have been complaining bitterly about their treatment. One said: "The Belgians always expect us to go into action first. They stick around at the rear."
