Auckland's Arts Festival
Sir,—What a wonderful festival of the arts Ackland is going to have! Their energetic city elders have managed to attract to the Queen City, all within one week, the National Orchestra. Robert Field-Dodgson and the Royal Musical Society. Stanislas Niedzcelski; Anna Russell. William Clauson. the Modern Jazz Quartet, a New Zealand painting and sculpture exhibition, an international salon of colour slides, furniture, floral, and architectural exhibitions. and many other artists and attractions. What comparable thing does the largest city in the Dominion have to offer? Our footling floral exhibition may amuse some: but they are the children of the city—both young and old. As a whole we are the dullest, most diffident, and dreariest city in the country. But I suppose some will console themselves with the thought that we are soon to have an industries fair!—Yours, etc., SIMON NATHAN. May 14, 1961.
