SHIP STILL AGROUND
Waimakariri Stranding
The 150-ton coaster Picton is still on the bar just inside the mouth of the Waimakariri river where she went aground on Friday afternoon. Attempts to refloat her by dropping her anchor in the stream and hauling her off under her own power failed At low tide yesterdav trucks were run alongside, and three loads of cargo were taken off. The vessel was lightened further during the night when more cargo was taken off at low tide, and more will be removed today, in readiness for a further attempt to float her off at hieh tide about 420 p.m. Many persons went to see the stranded vessel yesterday At low tide the ship is high and dry, and it is possible to walk right up to the side. Unless the weather deteri'orated there was no immediate damage to the Picton. said Mr C. T. Williams, managing director of C. Morgan Williams and Son, Ltd., the agents for the ship, last evening.
