OPERATION OF BUSES

‘Critical Conditions For Proprietors’

(NJ!. Press Association) HAMILTON, May 14. “Operating conditions for omnibus proprietors in New Zealand continue to be critical.” Mr A. A. Griffiths, president of the New Zealand Motor Omnibus Proprietors’ Association, said in his annual report presented at the association’s annual conference in Hamilton yesterday. Having reached an almost dead end with regard to bus fares, it was only by a high standard of efficiency and operation that many operators were able to maintain services, Mr Griffiths added. During the year there had been further increases in costs—wages in particular. This had affected the costs of operation directly and indirectly, particularly the costs of parts. “It is high time that serious consideration was given to the bus industry’s greatest problem—peak loading," says Mr Griffiths. If heavy lasses in maintaining almost 60 per cent, of fleets for peak loading purposes each week were realised. then steps should be taken to remove the blight. At the most, peak loading covered four hours a day from Monday to Friday, he added.
