Table Tennis Drewitt, Miss Taylor Win Country Titles
’ E. G. Drewitt and Miss ,B. Taylor, both of Mid- . Canterbury, won the men’s and women’s singles titles in the Canterbury sub-associa-tions’ table tennis tournament held at the Selwyn street hall on Saturday. Both players have held the titles on several previous occasions. The Malvern players. S. A. Swanson and Miss Y. Hart, were runners-up. Malvern retained the sub - associations’ shield with 33 H points, beating Mid - Canterbury, with 30 The five finals in the senior section all featured Mid-Canterbury and Malvern and, although Malvern won only one of these, it took the shield on the consistency of its lower-grade players. Drewitt has had very little match play this season, but he improved as the tournament progressed. When he beat the consistent M. Boulton (Malvern) in the third round he was already showing the benefit of the evening's play, and this assisted him considerably in winning his final two matches. S. Bennett (Mid-Canter-bury), a most promising player, took the first game at 21-9 in his semi-final with Drewitt. Bennett showed a preference for the backhand, and a very swift flick shot won him many points. In the second and third games Bennett’s successes with this shot were fewer, as Drewitt defended steadily. In the final Drewitt was perhaps a little fortunate to take the first game, and Swanson took the second with ease with some good forehands. The title-holder came back in the third game to concede only 10 points against a tiring Swanson. Miss Taylor’s victory in the women’s singles was something of a surprise, as Miss Hart had shown such good form in the open tournament at Easter. The score of 21-19, 21-18 indicates the closeness of the play, and Miss Taylor's strong forehand driving won her the vital points. Miss Hart played a steady game, but has not yet the ability to change quickly from defence to attack when the occasion demands. Clean Sweep Drewitt completed a clean sweep of the senior titles when he took the men’s doubles with Bennett and the mixed doubles with Miss Taylor. Both were very close matches, and the losing Malvern pairs were by no means disgraced. Miss Hart and Mrs T. Swanson took Malvern's only senior title when they beat Misses Taylor and D. Smith in the women’s doubles final. Miss J. Rich, who will attend the national coaching school for junior girls this month, was in good form to dominate the junior section. She was clearly superior to the other girls in the tournaMiss D. Johnson (Mid-Canterury) was runnerup in three events, and Misses P. Jordan (Springs), E. Kendall (North CanterantJ E - Cruickshank (Kiiesmere) also caught the eye with consistent play. B. Watkins (Springs) was a worthy winner of the boys’ singles, and after him came a very even group of players. The runner-up was R. Knight (Mid-Canterburv), who survived a very close entertaining match with W. Wyllie (North Canterbury), which went to 21-18 ivr 2 ,’ 21-19. R. Watson Malvern) and R. Taylor (Ellesmere) also impressed. Abbreviations used !n the results are:—(N.C.) North Canr? Ur W MC) ’ Mid-Canterbury. (M.) fc™’ <S -> Sprtn «’ Results are:— —_ „ Men’s Singles First Round —S.
