PROGRESS ON THE FINAL LINK OF THE HAAST HIGHWAY.—Work is progressing steadily on the last 20 miles of road between Paringa and Haast to complete the link between Westland and Otago. It is expected that the road will be completed towards the end of 1964. TOP LEFT: Driving piles for the biggest bridge on the project—across the Haast river about a mile from the coast. The bridge will be 2417ft long. TOP RIGHT: The only way to cross the river at present is by bulldozer. BOTTOM LEFT: The new road will wind for miles through dense bush. A bulldozer clears the way. BOTTOM RIGHT: A section of the partly-formed road about 10 miles north of Haast.
