Bettenhausen At Indianapolis

(N.Z P-A.-Reuter—Copvright) INDIANAPOLIS. May 12. A former champion American racing driver, Tony Bettenhausen, was killed today while practising tor the 500-mile Indianapolis race on May 30. Bettenhausen, aged 44. crashed into a wall on the main stright. The car hurdled the wall and crashed through a wire fence, landing in the first few rows of seats in the empty stands. A steward said he was killed outright. Bettenhausen, who was the United States champion in 1951 and 1958, had lapped at more than 149 miles an hour, the fastest practice lap in the track's history, before the crash. The father of four children—the eldest was aged 19 and the youngest was 9 Bettenhausen had been racing for 23 years. His death was the 53rd at the Indianapolis speedway since it was opened in 1909. Thirty drivers. 14 mechanics and nine spectators have been killed.
