Emphasis On Bias Cut In Amies Collection
(By
ZALIA THOMAS)
LONDON. Hardy Amies, who made some of the clothes for Queen Elizabeth's tour of Indi*, recently showed his latest collection for spring and summer, 1961. Emphasis was on bias—bias skirts, bias jackets, bias bodices and whole dresses ent on the cross. The straight would-be classic skirt almost disappeared. Even straight skirts in the collection had soft movement Pleats, both on the straight and on the cross, appeared often. Jackets were short, often with flowing backs and softened with tie-ends, either on collars or on shirts Fastenings were never restricting. Straight Coats Coats were straight with a hint at flare in the skirt, or had cropped sleeves which gave them the appearance of capes. Slender evening dresses were eat on the cross in
heavy crepe or soft r:bbed silk. Full-skirted evening dresses were as light as air. Colours included bright greens, pinks, oranges, soft pastels in mauve, olue and pink. Unusual combinations were tan and navy blue, navy blue and orange. Soft Fabrics As in almost every collection. both in London andi Paris, masses of georgette,' chiffon srd organza were! used. Satin, when used, was of the lightest kind, and full skirts hung softly over unstuffed petticoats. The collection was admirably summed up in a remark: made by a middle-aged; woman sitt'ng next to me.i when a handkerchief -point; dress was shown: "Good heavens' I had a dress like that 30 years ago.”
