SCHOOL MUSIC

Dominion Council Meets

The supplying of music equipment to primary schools was discussed at the annual meeting of the Dominion council of the New Zealand School Music Association in Wellington. Other matters discussed, says a statement by the president of the association (Mr R. A. Lilley, of Nelson), were the need for a review of the training of general teachers and specialists for primary and post-primary schools, the review of grading marks for music diplomas. the urgent need for the appointment of music advisers in each Education Department district, and the extension of service training. After the meeting, Mr Lilley, Mr K. Newson, of Christchurch (vice-presi-dent). and Mr W. Manins, of Auckland, met Mr J. Ewing, chief inspector of primary schools, Mr J. Hunter, chief inspector of post-primary schools, and Mr H. WaldonMills, adviser on school music. This meeting was highly satisfactory. Teachers could be assured that the department was aware of the present needs in the development of school music and was keenly interested in the work of the association.
