RED CROSS CADETS
Three Centres Compete
Wellington teams won all the trophies in the national link cadet competitions held by the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the New Zealand Red Cross Society in Christchurch during the weekend. Teams from the Auckland, Wellington, and North Canterbury centres at the society competed. About 60 officers and cadets stayed the week-end at the School for the Deaf, Sumner. “This was the first live-in week-end held in association with the competitions. The idea was to let the cadets spend as much time together as possible to get to know one another and compare their work.” said the director of the New Zealand Red Cross VA D and Link Cadets. Christchurch doctors and nurses judged the competitions in first aid and home nursing. Army officers judged uniforms, deportment and marching. Members of the welfare section of the North Canterbury VA-D. catered for the camp. Presentation Trophies were presented by the Deputy-Mayoress (Mrs H. P. Smith) at a ceremony on Saturday evening. The trophies won by Wellington teams were the Margaret Gillon Cup for first aid, the Valmai Hern Cup for oral first aid, the Webster Cup for home nursing, the Thornton Cup for oral home nursing, and the Dorothy Jenner Wales shield for marching. A North Canterbury team was highly commended in the Webster Cup competition.
