PRE-SCHOOL TRAINING
“Need Among Maoris”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. “The Maori population is increasing almost twice as fast as the European, and with this big increase in population the need for pre-school training becomes even more important” said the Controller of Maori Welfare (Mr W. | Herewini' at the annual conference of the New Zealand i Federation of Nursery Play Centres today. • “Most people think of the I Maori people as the type they see in cities,” said Mr Hereiwini. “We tend to forget about the Maori people who live in shacks with mud floors. “I can not emphasise enough the importance of pre-school training for Maori children living in these conditions. They live mainly in rural areas, and the city life :is entirely new to them, i “Unless they are approached ! by a person, such as one from ! this federation, the Maori f people will not send their i children to school until they i have to. This can be a great draw-back for the children.” | Mr Herewini said.
