Guiness Shows Dash In Sprint Success

Guiness gave a dashing display to win the C. L. Ayson Handicap, the main sprint race at Oamaru on Saturday. He was pushed backin the early rush for positions and had at least 12 horses in front of him racing to the halfmile.

Whipdale set the pace, but he was beaten three furlongs out. Marquess racing clear soon after. He turned for home ahead of Mundamus, Gold Maru. Worthy River, Sand Drift, Meas, First Song and Whipaway, with Guiness attempting to work clear along the inside. Gold Maru looked the probable winner just inside the furkng, but Guiness, after changing course several times in the straight, unwound a brilliant burst which carried him past the post with two lengths to spare. Gold Maru paced a sound race for second, a length in front of Light Comedy, which finished boldly from the turn.

First Song made up ground in the straight for fourth, but was three lengths behind Light Comedy. Then, almost in line, came Whipaway. Count Cavan. Worthy River. Sand Drift, Lileas, Mundamus and Marquess, with Red Belle at the head of the others.

Nevan, Banquier. Lighi Comedy, Count Cavan and Dieman Don gave ground at the start. Maud Noble broke at the end of two furlongs and checked Marquess. Trotters Beaten ■ Graeme Scott, which did his ealier racing in New South Wales, justified the solid support for him with a decisive win in the Waikaura Handicap. He made a splendid beginning from 24 yards and was in front at the end of two furlongs. Mina Lass was on terms with Graeme Scott most of the way and they were followed into the straight by Bandsaw, Robert Medoro Tracey’s Pal, Catapult, Gift Brigade, and Mayfair Star, which broke. Graeme Scott did not look like being beaten and won most convincingly by a length and a half. Bandsaw trotted another sound race for second, two lengths in front at Gift Brigade, which battled on gamely over the final furlong.

Mina Lass battled on for fourth a length back, followed by Catapult, with Robert Medoro and Tracey’s Pal, both of which broke at the straight entrance, Mayfair Star end Andy’s Double next to finish. Narrow Win Local Princess gained a narrow win over Robyn in the second leg of the double, the Papakaio Handicap, which was run at a muddling pace. Local Princess was slow early after meeting trouble and was twelfth in the early part of the race. She was not asked to improve until after the half-mile. She was on terms with Worthy Dieman and Stormy Parade racing to the straight, with Robyn. Pacework, Directway, Anama and Implore (badly placed) next. Robyn looked in for a comfortable win when she passed Local Princess about the halffurlong. However. Local Princess fought back gamely and won by a long head. Robyn battled on for second, ahead of Pacework, which did well to finish so close up after losing ground nt the start Meadow Haze was a useful fourth, just ahead of Implore, which received a shocking run Anama. Worthy Diemen. Stormy Parade and Worthy Flicka were next to finish. Anama, Oregan Lass, Stormy Parade and Phildora made mistakes.

Regina Chief’s Win Regina Chief gained a long overdue win when he beat Rosalind Globe in the Second Trial Handicap. He was slow away and was eleventh in a close-running field at the half-mile. Regina Chief sprinted round the field near the two furlongs and led Meadow Glow into the straight, with Vignon, Try Wyn, Young Mina, and Rosalind Globe next. Regina Chief was clear by about five lengths just inside the furlong and was not troubled to win by two lengths. Rosalind Globe made up ground over the last furlong to finish second, with Try Wyn, which lost her position in the middle stages, half a length back third, a length in front of a solid finisher in Carlisle. Young Mina was right up fifth, ahead of Elpestre, Meadow Glow, and Storm King. The favourite. My Lawyer, was never a danger. Smart Youngster Flaming Way confirmed the high opinion formed of him earlier in the season with a fine win over another promising three-year-old John Scott in the Innovation Handicap. Flaming Way broke just after the start, but quickly settled down again. He improved sharply to be fourth at the six furlongs. Robert Medoro being forced wide at this stage. John Scott and Robert Medoro forced most of the pace over the last six furlongs. They turned for home ahead of Adee, which broke, Flaming Way, Gay Jillian, and Gleaning. R. Young did not have to ask Flaming Way for a serious effort to win by a short length. John Scott forced almost all the pace and he fought back strongly when challenged. He should soon make amends. Robert Medoro was two lengths back third, clear of Gay Jillian, with a gap to Adee, Dorocin, Tracey's Pal,

Gleaning, and Rebel. Most of the field made mistakes Trusted Surprises Trusted, a three-year-old gelding by Meadow Chief from Special Trust trained at Hinds by his part-owner, W E. Lowe, upset calculations with a win in the First Trial Handicap. Trusted hesitated at the start, but did not lose much ground. He improved three wide with seven furlongs left and worked to a clear lead at the five furlongs. He turned for home just ahead of Countess Hanover, with Radiant Storm, Borodin. Heather Lad. Nolens Volens, and Wee Sheba close up. Countess Hanover had a short lead inside the furlong, but Trusted came again and got up to win by a nose Countess Hanover was a sound second after starting from the second line. Wee Sheba made ground for third, wearing down Radiant Storm, which had every chance. Heather Lad. a surprise favourite, was a useful fifth, ahead of Nolens Volens, Make Up. and Johnny Smith. Runfree, Congo Boy, Simmonds, Wee Sheba, Princess Hanover, which fell, and Regal Song, lost ground at the start.
