KING OF JORDAN
“Abdication Offer Made”
BEIRUT, May 9. The Beirut newepeper “Annahar” said today that King Hussein had offered to abdicate in favour of his brother, Mohammed, because of opposition to his forthcoming marriage to Britishborn Toni Gardiner. It said that although the Cabinet and Parliament were opposed to the marriage they rejected the idea of abdication. The report said that exQueen Zein, King Hussein's mother, refused to give her blessing to the match even after it was announced, the British United Press reported. In Amman yesterday a Royal decree by King Hussein granted Miss Gardiner Jordanian nationality. Their marriage is due to take place at the end of this month.
