WHEATCROWING POLICIES

More Interest Needed

Farmers should take a greater interest in United Wheatgrowers, the organisation the Government looked to for the opinion of the growers. Sir Walter Mulholland told delegates to the an-

nual conference of the agriculture section of North • Canterbury Federated Farmers. Through the days of the wheat pool, Wheat Board, and voluntary organisations, the Farmers’ Union had acted on behalf of the farmer, he said. Under the present system with the Wheat Committee the farmers were represented by United Wheatgrowers, and the committee also had representatives of millers, bakers, poultry industry, and the Government. “The Wheat Committee Is purely an administrative body—it has nothing to do with policy. The most it can do is to make recommendations to the Minister." Sir Walter Mulholland said. Policy-making lay between United Wheatgrowers and the Government on behalf of the farmers. “The agriculture section of Federated Farmers should have the main control over United Wheatgrowers through the election of members of the electoral committee,” he said.
