EXTRA RACE PERMITS
Minister Has No Power
"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 11. The granting of extra race permits was a matter for the Legislature to decide, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) said yesterday. He was commenting on an Auckland Racing Club’s application for four extra permits for twilight midweek meetings. Mr Gotz said all permits available were already granted, and unless permits for day meetings were to be transferred he had no discretion to issue more permits. Other racing clubs and the Trotting Conference, he said, were also seeking extra permits. The likelihood of extra permits being granted remains in doubt. Some sections of the Government are understood to believe that there should be more “centralisation” in racing.
