SHOP HELD TO BE GROCERY
Arbitration Court’s Decision
In a reserved decision on a case heard in Christchurch on April 13 the Court of Arbitration holds that the shop of Cecil Thomas Rochford. at 375 Durham street, is predominantly a grocer’s shop and that Alice May Greer was employed there as a grocer's assistant. The case was one in which the Inspector of Awards. Thomas Reginald Tooman, sought to recover from Cecil Thomas Rocbford the sum of £442 3s lid said to be due to Alice May Greer as arrears of wages and overtime and holiday payments under the provisions of the CanterburyRetail Grocers’ Assistants Award. “At the commencement of the hearing, counsel for the defendant stated that it seemed to him that the important question for determination was whether the shop of the defendant is a grocery and suggested that the proceedings be limited for the time being to evidence and argument on that issue. If the Court decided that the shop is a grocery, then he thought that the parties could more than likely reach some settlement as to the amount of any- payment that should be made to the worker. This course was agreed to on behalf of the plaintiff,” says the Court's judgment. Mr G. H. Sorrell appeared for the Inspector of Awards Mr J. G. Hutchison appeared for the defendant, Rochford.
