Competitions High Standard In National Dancing
“It was very difficult to decide the placings in senior grades of this section—they were all so good.” said Mrs Ngaire McCabe, judge of the national dancing in the Canterbury Competitions Society’s forty-ninth annual festival. There was very keen competition among the under 16 groups. The first three placings were always very close, with only one mark separating them in many cases.
“The standard of dress was perfect. I could not find any faults in the arrangement of the kilts. “It was very pleasing to see such good talent among the boy competitors. I should like to see more from them in future competitions as they could quite easily surpass the girls in a number of grades. “A big contribution to the high quality of these grades was the fine piping. Much depends on the ability of the piper, and your pipers were among the best I have heard.”
The versatility of the piano accordian was displayed by the Mayflower Accordian Band at last evening’s demonstration concert in the Civic Theatre. The Band playing hymns, marches and the traditional tango with smoothness and precision, gave ample proof that these instruments are capable of doing justice to music of all moods and tempos. Jeanette Luke, winner of the humorous recitation. 10 and under 12 years, gave a clever performance of her successful piece. "Infant Prodigy.”
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the 10-minute entertainment groups which have been performing throughout the week.” said Mr Finlay Robb, judge of the vocal section. “I have found it very hard to come to a decision, as there was such a high standard shown by all the groups. “These groups are almost at professional standard, and with more flow and continuity they will achieve it. Don’t drop this type of entertainment. I want you to work on it. take it round and keep practising. You have the means to bring a lot of enjoyment to many people.” NATIONAL DANCING Civic Theatre Highland Fling (Novice,.— Under 12 years: Annette Finnegan 1. Christine Mansfield 2. Fay Alexander 3.
