TROTTING PERMITS
Possible Govt Caucus Talks
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 12. More permits for trotting ‘ and racing might be dis- • cussed at a Government ■ caucus toward the end of this 1 month. Mr C. S. Thomas. ? president of the New Zea- ' land Trotting Conference. told a meeting of representa- ' tives of North Island trot- * ting clubs in Auckland today. 1 Mr Thomas said the conference had urged time and again that the number of I permits be increased. “I E really think we have a ease e now that is unanswerable," - he added. Mr D. I. McDonald said s trotting “is hamstrung - through lack of permits by t a Government that needs 5 revenue.” r He added: “It is the easiest form of taxation I r know of. We do all the - work and the Government just rakes in the money. Yet, t trotting is continually re- ? fused more permits. ? “It is farcical.” said Mr 1 McDonald, “that an area like r Manawatu with a population of 100.000 has only six pers mits a year, and another 1 area with a much smaller t population has eight permits.” Mr T. J. Banfield thought 6 that at least 10 permits were s needed in the North Island 3 to ease the situation. “But it is not enough to s solve the problem,” he said.
