N.Z. BUTTERFAT EXPORTS
Expanded Business With Mauritius
New Zealand’s expanding trade in milk solids will be boosted by new business from one of the New Zealand dairy industry’s oldest customers—the island of Mauritius in the Indian Oeean.
The general manager of the Dairy Products Marketing Commission <Mr P. B. Marshall) said yesterday that a milk processing plant undei construction in Mauritius would have a New Zealander as manager and would look to New Zealand for its requirements of butterfat and other milk solids.
The plant manager will be Mr D. M. Mahon, of Blenheim. who will take up his appointment in June. Mr Mahon, who is manager of the Marlborough Milk Treatment. Company at Blenheim, holds a Massey Agricultural College diploma in market milk and has had wide experience in milk processing.
New Zealand's trade in. dairy produce with Mauritius dates back to 1870 when shipments of butter and cheese began. It was one of the earliest of all markets for New Zealand's butter and cheese. The milk processing plant which is now being built will produce milk in cartons, icecream. and a full range of other dairy products for a market of 600.000. Dairy farming is carried on on a small smale in Mauritius, and the processing plant w.ll obtain from local herds some supplies of milk, which will be supplemented by New Zealand butterfat and oth°r milk solids.
