TOWN CLERK’S THEFTS
Stole From Council (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. May 11. Six charges of theft of amounts totalling £956 9s 6d from the Palmerston Borough Council were admitted by the former Town Clerk, Bernard John O’Grady, aged 31, when he appeared before Mr J. G. Warrington. S.M., in the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court today. He was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. Detective-Sergeant J. K. Hamilton said in some instances O’Grady had made out fictitious vouchers which had been signed by the Mayor and another member of the council. In another case, he had kept the money from the electricity meters of the Memorial Hall.
Two days before a Government audit last month. O’Grady secured leave on the pretext of going to Welling; ton for an interview for another job. but went to Sydney. Later, however, he returned assisted with the audit, and admitted his offences.
