CRICKET LANCASHIRE’S BIG SCORE AGAINST AUSTRALIA

<N.Z Press Association—Copyright)

‘MANCHESTER. May 11 The Australians* hopes of an answer today to the Lancashire run-getting spree at Old Trafford yesterday rest heavily on the third-wicket partnership between Harvev and O’Neill. The pair have already put on 33. but they need many more if the county is to be headed on the

first innings. Lancashire yesterday scored 310 for seven wickets declared. at better than a run a minute, and then took the first two Australian wickets for 45 runs. It was at this stage that Harvey and O'Neill came together, and prevented any further Lancashire breakthrough. If these two can get a start today, both should do well, because the pitch Is full of runs It is playing easily and truly, and the spin bowlers are finding it difficult to get much turn. That is why Kline and Simpson were such easy targets for the county batsmen,, led by P. Marner <B7> and J. Bond <6B) yesterday. Seven Sixes Hit They led the onslaught, which included seven sixes, and came at such a rate that the last 60 runs were scored in 33 minutes. They were helped by ragged Australian fielding and by four dropped catches, which could' have reduced the Lancashire total considerably.

Despite the unhelpful wscket. the Australian bowling was unimpressive. However, McKenzie should not be disheartened because of the three chances dropped off him. and he could have bad much better figures than the one wicket for 55 runs with which he finished yesterday. The Australian batsmen now have the chanee to make amends. Burge and Booth, both in form, will follow Harvey and O'Neill.

Lancashire officials are expecting a much better crowd today than the disappointing 5000 who watched yesterdav's play. They think that O'Neill and Harvey batting together will draw many to the ground. Again there will be a long day. with play finishing at 7 p.m. local time.
