FIRE IN SHIP AT SEA

Blaze Fought In Bad Weather (HZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 11. The crew of the Aucklandbound British cargo ship Daisei (4000 tons) pumped chemicals for eight hours into a hold of the stormtossed ship to control a fire burning next to the oil fuel tanks near the engineroom on Sunday. The hold was then sealed to deprive the blaze of any fresh air. The Daisei arrived at Auckland yesterday afternoon, three days after the outbreak was first noticed. Smoke poured out when the hold was opened for inspection by a marine surveyor and chemist. Heaps of blowing ashes were shovelled into buckets for removal. The Daisei arrived from Suva and Japan. The master. Captain E. Batchelor, an Australian, said 3001 b of carbon dioxide chemical was pumped into the hold after the fire was reported at 6 a.m. on Sunday. The weather was “frightful” at the time, he said.
