PARTITION OF LAOS

Avoidance Hoped For

(N.Z. Press Association) (WELLINGTON. May 11.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight he earnestly hoped it would be possible to avoid any partition of Laos between the Communists and the Laotian

Government. He was replying to questions at a press conference. Mr Holyoake had been asked to comment on press reports that some United States diplomats would put forward a proposal at the 14-nation Geneva conference on Laos for the kingdom to be partitioned into Communist and Government-held zones.

The British Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) was reported to be strongly opposed to this.

‘‘l sincerely hope the people of Laos can be unified under an independent government —and I underline ‘independent government’,” Mr Holyoake told reporters.
