New Steeple On Church

A galvanised steel steeple was hoisted into place on St. Mary's Church, Addington, yesterday. The church had been without a steeple for 25 years.

The steeple was designed by Mr D. E. Donnithorne, a Christchurch architect, to remain in keeping with contemporary church architecture while preserving the elements of style of the original shingled steeple. Built with the church 94 years ago. this was demolished in 1936.

The new steeple is painted in grey and white to harmonise with the dark roof and white walls of the church. It is surmounted by a stainless steel cross, 20in high. The contractors, the Cole Construction Company, lifted the steeple in place in little more than half an hour. With four men working, the steeple was bolted in place before the rain set in.

Standing in the rain, the vicar (the Rev. J. D. Froudi watched the operation intently. The church would now be complete for the parish's ninety-fifth anniversary celebrations next year, he said.
