Two Vessels To Call

Two brand-new ships, of contrasting types and trades, will pay their first visits to the South Island when they call at Lyttelton about the middle of next week.

One is the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company's new motor vessel. Storm, which will enter the Lyttelton graving dock before s’arting coastal trade. This is usual procedure with new vessels at the end of their maiden voyage. The other vessel is the Government-owned Islands trader, Moana Roa, of 2750 tons, which is making a direct voyage from Rarotonga to Lyttelton with fruit and passengers. A successor to the veteran Maui Pomare. the Moana Roa. also a motor ship, has accommodation for 40 passengers, and should be of p-eat interest to ship-lovers in Canterbury. According to advice received from the agents, the Moana Roa will discharge at Lyttelton 3300 cases of oranges, 770 cases of mandarins. 1600 cases of tangerines, 910 cases of grapefruit, 217 cases of bananas. 117 cases of tomatoes, and 307 cartons of fruit juice. She is expected to land 14 passengers.

It is hoped that the Moana Roa will be able to sail for Auckland within 24 hours of arrival at Lyttelton.
