CLOSING OF MINES
Labour Party Opposition
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. The New Zealand Labour Party is opposed to any attempt to close down the coal industry at Blackball and Paparoa, the party’s annual conference in Wellington agreed today. The close-down would mean loss of employment for the miners and the consequent necessity for homes in other districts, it was said. The conference decided to urge the Government to solve the problem by establishing the proposed briquette plant at Blackball and by opening up the proposed new smoke-o mine.
Starting construction of a road from Liverpool to Roa and setting up a sales campaign to promote sales of Blackball fine coal would also help matters the conference decided.
