NEW SCIENCE WING

Intermediate At Fendalton

(From Our Own Reporter! WELLINGTON. May 11.

A grant has been approved i to enable the Christchurch: Technical College board of governors to accept the; lowest tender for the college’s new science wing, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) announced today. ■ Government approval had also been given to the accept- ■ ance of a tender for the erection of the proposed new, intermediate school at Fendalton. the Minister said. Plans for the new science wing at the Technical College, which were first authorised in 1957 provide for a two-storeyed reinforcedconcrete extension of the woodwork block, the construction of the wing to match the existing building. The wing will contain five science laboratories, four classrooms, and a library. Cost Reduced Tenders for the new building received by the Technical College board were forwarded to the Department of Education last December, said the Minister. The lowest tender had been in excess of the estimate, but as a result of negotiations with the architects, amendments had been made which would reduce the cost to an acceptable figure.

“This brings to a satisfactory conclusion a project that has been under consideration for a long while.” said Mr Tennent. “I am pleased that the way is now clear for the board to proceed without further delay.” Fendalton Intermediate “The new Fendalton intermediate school will have 12 classrooms and seven specialist rooms, together with an assembly hall, and administration facilities, and will accommodate up to 510 pupils.” said the Minister. “Situated next to the present Burnside school, with separate access from Ham road, it will draw its pupils from the surrounding Fendalton, Burnside, Aorangi, and Wairakei schools.”
