NEW RAILWAY BRIDGES

Work At Kowhai And Ashley

New railway bridges over the Kowhai and Ashley rivers are beginning to take shape. The 1800 ft bridge over the Ashley river was now about half finished, and should be ready for use in six months, said the district engineer of the Railways Department (Mr G. Shrimpton) yesterday.

Pile-driving on the 500 ft Kowhai river bridge would probably finish in about a week, he said. The next job was to build reinforced concrete piers. This bridge, started three months ago to replace the bridge washed out in 1951. would probably be finished in 12 months.

Renewal of the wooden bridge at Waitohi, a mile south of Picton was under consideration, Mr Shrimpton said, but because of present financial stringencies this job might be deferred to 1962.
