ANTARCTIC WEEK
September Plans Discussed
Plans for the proposed Antarctic Week in Christchurch from September IB to September 24 were at the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society. The chairman (Mr H. F. Griffiths) said that RearAdmiral David M. Tyree had expressed enthusiasm for the idea when told about it. The programme would probably start with an “Antarctic week-end" conducted by the society. Mr Griffiths said. The council in Wellington had promised it could arrange for speakers to attend.
The rest of the week would feature window displays. films, talks to local organisations by United States personnel, and an Operation Deep Freeze open day at Harewood. The society also planned to arrange the publication of a book similar to “Antarctic Today.” published in 1950, he said.
Membership of the branch was now 79, Mr Griffiths said. During the year four meetings were held. One of these was a cocktail party to welcome Rear-Admiral Tyree and Mrs Tyree to New Zealand at the atart of the last operation. On another occasion Rear-Admiral Tyree, addressed the branch.
Officers elected were: president, Mr A. H. Robins; tricepresident, Mr R. J. Stanley: committee. Messrs H. C. Gray, W. D. Wood, A. Anderson, A. J. Roberts, and A. C. Brustad. A seceretary will be elected later.
