OFFICERS OF HEALTH
Conference Opened Yesterday
The distribution and effects of radioactive fall-out was the main topic of discussion when medical officers of health from all parts of the country met in their biennial conference in Christchurch yesterday. The day was spent at the Dominion X-ray Laboratory, where the 20 officers attending the conference saw demonstrations and listened to lectures from experts.
The conference was opened by the Director-General of Health (Dr. H. B. Turbott). and the officers then saw the Dominion X-ray Laboratory at work.
Biological effects of radiation and the establishment of acceptable safe levels were discussed, as well as the position of New Zealand in the pattern of global fallout. A visit was then made to the fall-out laboratories, where demonstrations were given of the monitoring of foodstuffs and water.
The day concluded with a lecture on the radiological aspects of civil defence. The conference will conclude today.
