Competitions Dancing Standard Praised
“Christchurch is fortunate in having such a talented group of young dancers,” said Miss Judy Lewis, judge of the ballet and tap dancing sections of the Christchurch Competitions Society's festival, last evening. "I am delighted with the high standard of performances, especially in the eight to 10 years and 14 years and over groups. “The tapping is very good. I consider that Mary Wise, winner of the Flint Cup for tap dancing, has almost reached professional standard.
“The winners of the pas de deux, under 12 years. Lee McMenamin and Ewen Tonkin. gave an excellent performance. It is a long time since I have seen such a high standard in this type of work from two children in this age group. Lee McMenamin Is a good all-round dancer, and is showing great promise.
“The costuming in all sections is really beautiful. It goes a long way to increase the atmosphere and effectiveness of the group sections." A visitor to last evening’s demonstration concert was Mr H. Sweeney, a life member of the society. Mr Sweeney, who was accompanied by Mrs Sweeney, was a member of the society’s first committee in 1908. Richard Warnock and John Travers, winners of the duet, 16 and under 18 years, in the instrumental section. repeated their afternoon's performance of “Spanish Dance.” They showed good finger work and played with a clear tone.
