“N.Z. Lamb Sales Possible In Italy’

LONDON, May 9. New Zealand lamb could be sold in Italy if some help was given by the Italians, the British representative on the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board (Mr D. L. M. Martin) said at a reception in Bologna yesterday. The reception was on the opening day of the Bologna International Samples Fair where a New Zealand stand "introduces lamb to the Italian housewives, and meat
wholesalers and retailers.” Mr Martin said: "We think Italian housewives will enjoy the flavour and tenderness of lamb once they have sampled it.
“We shall be most happyto welcome thousands of Italian housewives, and to hear their candid remarks about the palatability, flavour and tenderness of New Zealand lamb," he said. The lamb will be cooked on the stand in a variety of ways and samples will be given away to housewives and visitors. “New Zealand lamb.” said Mr Martin, “is a relatively inexpensive kind of quality meat.”
There is a customs duty of 18 per cent, on lamb imports into Italy, an administration fee of 1 per cent., and sales tax of 6.3 per cent., so New Zealand lamb would probably be sold in Italy at a higher wholesale price than in Britain.
