Home State Honours

NEW YORK, May 10. In New Hampshire, the home State of Commander Alan Shepard, the first American spaceman, the Legislature met today in extraordinary session to honour the astronaut. The 424 members of the Legislature unanimously: Congratulated Commander Shepard for having guided the first manually - controlled space vehicle. Declared that his birthplace. East Derry, New Hampshire. “hereafter shall be known as Spacetown. United States,’’ and “New Hampshire shall henceforth be known as the fatherland of space travel." Decided to hang a portrait of the commander in the State House beside pictures of other New Hampshire heroes of the past; and Invited Commander Shepard and his family to visit the State capital of Concord to address the Legislature—the day to be proclaimed a State holiday.
