Camera Sales
Sir,—“Fair Play” says “there are many new comera shops.” How right he is! For the trade to start “squealing” because a tourist brings a camera home with him merely demonstrates how anxious it is “to hop in for its chop.” From my superficial examination of the business area of this city I have formed the opinion that Christchurch has more camera stores than any other place of comparable size in the world. The heart-rending cry that import licences will now be harder to get does not evoke any sympathy froffi me. It is obvious that they have had until now something in the nature of an “open slather,” proof of this being the packed shelves. There must be a fat profit in photographic gear. What is the “mark-up?”— Yours, etc., TELLUS. May 9, 1961.
