Jets To Christchurch

Sir, —After all the pub-, licity given oh Pan American Airways’ willingness to operate services to Christchurch by jet—and. I understand. P.A.A. have now the latest engines in their jet aircraft —do Mr Guthrey and his supporters realise that a Boeing 707 with 'turbofan engines can operate from the existing airport at Christchurch without restriction? Why, therefore, have these airlines which have indicated their willingness to operate from Christchurch not taken some steps to do so? —Yours, etc., AGA. May 4, 1961. [Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the Christchurch City Councils airport committee, said: “Pan American Airways expressed their willingness to use Christchurch immediately provided they are given trans-Tasman rights, which the Government has refused.”]
