Epstein Exhibition
Sir,—There is at present in Auckland a travelling exhibition of sculpture and drawings by Epstein. Supplementary works were lent by the galleries in Auckland, Wellington. and Dunedin. Christchurch had nothing to lend. From the art school here five students hitchhiked to Auckland to see the show and many others wished to go, but expense was prohibitive. Was the director of the McDougall Gallery aware of the impor‘ance of this exhibition and did he make any effort to secure it for Christchurch? There is practically nothing in this city for art students to refer to, and here was an admirable chance to repair, if only temporarily, this deficiency Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. May 3, 1961. (The director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery 'Mr W S. Baverstock) said: "Your correspondent and 1 apparently agree on the importance of the Epstein exhibition. It was not available for travelling in New Zealand and could be shown only in Auckland. Christchurch has missed no chances of getting the exhibition. Mr P. A. Tomory, director of the Auckland Art Gallery, informed me that the English lenders are anxious to get their work back and that a number of the exhibits are wanted in August for the Edinburgh Festival, at which. I understand, there will be a memorial exhibition.”]
