‘HIDE-BOUND’ OFFICIALS
Foreign Office Security
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 9 A former security officer at the British Embassy in Washington, Squadron Leader F. Thompson, said today that he had been blocked in his efforts to overhaul security at the Foreign Office by “hide-bound officials.” From 1948 to 1953 he had tried to have the system overhauled “but they were so hide-bound in their traditional objections to anything new that they refused to entertain it.” Squadron Leader Thompson was the man chosen to form Foreign Office security in 1948. Britain’s present system was “completely and utterly useless," he said. Civil servants or diplomats could not be expected to carry out security work. Trained, selected men were required and the only source he knew was the special branch at Scotland Yard.
