Progress On Buildings

Progress on buildings at the school was good, and the physical education block was complete except for painting and electrical fittings, the headmaster (Mr A. B. Ryan) reported to a meeting of the interim board of governors of the Mairehau High School last evening. The boiler-house and tractor shed unit was almost complete, and the heating installations were expected to be ready for testing this week. “Work on block two has fallen behind schedule, and I am doubtful if these rooms will be ready for occupation by the opening of the new term,” he said. Two members of the staff had left at the end of the term. They were Mrs S. E. Alexander, a part-time teacher in commercial subjects, and Mr G. R. Simpson, a part-time teacher in social studies. Mr Ryan paid tribute to their work. “Winter sports activities are now well established The school is represented in Wednesday inter-school competitions by three Rugby teams, two basketball teams, and both boys’ and girls’ hockey teams,” said Mr Ryan “Two teams play in Saturday competitions conducted by the Canterbury Basketball Association.” School Choir A school choir had been established and plans were in hand to hold an interhouse choral competition. During the winter term, a wide range’ of cultural activities would be provided for the lunch-hour and afterschool periods. A Crusader group under the leadership of the Rev. W. A. Davies was meeting in the lunch hour once a week. “Considerable* quantities of science equipment have been delivered during the last fortnight, much of the apparatus being of Japanese manufacture and of good quality,” said Mr Ryan. Some items, however, were of inferior quality, and these had been referred to the Stores Division of the Education Department for action. The teaching of drawing classes had been impeded. 'The lawns on the Hills road frontage and in front of the classroom block have been sown, and at present men and machines are levelling the area to be used for tennis courts.” The clerk of works had advised that the assembly hall would be completed by the end of September, said Mr Ryan. He suggested the board make tentative plans for the official opening of the school
