COST OF ECG PRODUCTION

Board Chairman’s Comment

If costs of production could be reduced over-pro-duction of eggs would not be so great a cause of worry in the future, the chairman of the New Zealand Poultry marketing, Mr McLatchie told poultry farmers attending a refresher course which began at Canterbury Agricultural College yesterday. Since the industry had taken over the business of marketing. Mr McLatchie said, the Egg Marketing Authority (of which he is also chairman) had been active in stimulating the sale of eggs in New Zealand, and. with the assistance of distributors and retailers, had done a reasonably good job. The sale of eggs had probably been about doubled, but producers were keeping pace with this expansion in business, so that in the long run they were not benefitting much. Of much more lasting benefit to the industry was. however, likely to be knowledge of husbandry received by poultry farmers through refresher courses and general education. Great strides had been made in the last year, and it was expected that still greater strides would be made in the next, so that costs of production could be reduced.
