LABOUR CHANGE

“Socialism Again”

( N Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 9. The British Labour Party executive was expected to endorse a return to fullblooded socialism next week, the “Daily Mail” reported. It would range from nationalisation of key industries and urban lands to integration of public schools into State education. The nationalisation plans were approved last night at a meeting in the House of Commons of Labour's home policy committee, the newspaper said. The party executive was also expected to endorse a vast “social-cover umbrella” which would guarantee halfpay upon retirement. The party leader. Mr Hugh Gaitskell, was firmly against extending nationalisation by conventional means after the last General Election. He had reluctantly agreed to go along with the committee, the newspaper said.
