MACHINERY FOUND

Cases In Shed At Wellington

Two heavy cases of machinery for Christchurch firms, which disappeared after being unloaded from the Coptic at Lyttelton on February 22, were found yesterday in a Wellington Harbour Board shed, according to advice received by an official of Overseas Carpets (N.Z.), Ltd.

The two cases, each weighing about a ton and a half and valued at more than £2500. were consigned from England to Overseas Carpets (N.Z), Ltd., and the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd.

How they got to Wellington is still a mystery, but it is believed they may have been taken there from Lyttelton in a coastal vessel. Arrangements had been made for the return of the cases to Christchurch at the first opportunity, and inquiries were being made as to how they got to Wellington, said the Railways Department in a statement issued yesterday. The machinery for the carpet company comprises the middle section of a yarnspinning plant which is being installed in its factory in Maces road, Bromley. The crate for the woollen comCany contains parts for a urr-crushing plant which is to be fitted to a woollencarding machine. Information received by the two companies was that the cases were checked off the Coptic and loaded on a railway waggon for carriage to the railway yards at Waltham.

A third case, consigned to Scott Brothers, Ltd., and containing 1001 b of asbestos washers, is still missing. This was not originally reported missing, but a claim has been put forward by the company saying the contents are urgently needed. The secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston) said last evening that someone had done good work in finding the cases. It was a pity the losses were not reported sooner, he said.
