GIFT PARCEL AGENCIES

Australia (N.Z.P.A CANBERRA. May «. The Commonwealth Government will investigate the activities of ’ agencies that tend gift pareels from new Australians to families in Communist countries. The Minister of Customs (Senator N. H. Henty) said this in the Senate when he described the work of the agencies as a serious matter.
Senator Henty said he knew of two agencies, one in Perth and one at Sunshine, which charged 100 per cent, and 75 per cent, of the retail price the new Australians had paid for the gift.
Senator Henty said that for one parcel worth £9, additional fees came to £l7 Os 3d.
Charge* went up steeply on parcels sent to Poland. One invoice showed charges of £l7 17s on a parcel worth £2 16s 7d.
