Canterbury Y.F.C. Council Activity
Members of Young Farmers’ Clubs in the Canterbury’ Council area gained major national honours in the 1960-61 year, the chairman <Mr N. Q. Wright) noted in his report to the annual meeting of the counciL Mr P. G. Morrison was elected Dominion president, Messrs A.. E. Hiatt and R. C. Dodson won the United Kingdom and United States exchange visits. Mr J. N. Allan had the highest aggregate in the national stock judging contest, Messrs M. G. Rose, J, A. Johns, W. Clarkson and J. W. Allan also won individual titles and Mid-Canterbury was second in the teams' aggregate. Messrs B. Frazer. M. Leech and D. Petrie, of the Rangiora club, won the South Island debating final. “This is an impressive list and it would appear that the standard of our members in relation to other parts of the Dominion must be high,” said Mr Wright. There are now 75 clubs in the area with 1893 active members and 580 school members. A new club has been formed at Dunsandel. '"Though our membership is fairly stable it is the duty of all of us, as members to work constantly for the recruitment of more members.” said the chairman. “It is one of the main problems of our movement.
"In summarising council activities for the year I feel that the present organisation of the federation is good and if club members become aware of what they can obtain from the movement by participating more in club
and district organisations and activities, the efficiency of th* movement will improve,” said Mr Wright. "We, as council members, must strive to improve our own and surrounding clubs because they are the heart of our organisation.” Debating The Dominion president of the movement (Mr P. G. Morrison) said great emphasis should always be placed on debating as able speakers eould best put forward the farmers’ point of view. He said ties with Federated Farmers were gaining greatly in strength and the support of that organisation had been gained in promoting the Young Farmers’ Club land settlement policy. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the work done by two foundation members of the movement, Messrs A. C. Cameron and J. E. Davies, and of Mr W. H. Gillespie, who died recently. Officers elected were:— Chairman. Mr W. J. Medlicott; vice-chairman, Mr J. King; co-opted members. Messrs W. V. Hadfield, F. J. Murray, P. G. Morrison, A. F. Wright, D. Turpie; secretary, Mr J. Davis; treasurer, Mr A. B. George; auditor, Mr T. Randall; honorary members, Messrs J. Foley, A. D. Bean. J. U. Barclay. R. C. Dodson. J. P. Marshall. J. B. Campbell, I. T. Armstrong, A. E.- Hiatt and A. B. McLachlan; delegates to Dominion YJ.C, executive, Messrs N. Q. Wright and E. C. Wright; delegates to Federated Farmers, Messrs N. Q. Wright
and A. Rivers; delegate to South Island Pig Council. - Mr D. A. Petrie; delegates to Lincoln College farmers’ conference committee, Mr T. E. Jenkins; delegates to Wool Board’s wool handling and shearing competition committee, Messrs J. King and T. E. Jenkins: selection panel, Messrs W. J. Medlicott, J. V. Barclay, M. Fleming. W. P. Hadfield and D. M. Lili (substitute).
Mr A. B. Georg* ha* retired «s secretary after six years' service.
