City Council Vacancy
Sir,—Why can’t the Citizens’ Association avoid a byelection by allowing Mr Macfarlane to take the vacant office as the candidate with the highest vote at the last election not elected? This would save pounds and the Citizens’ Association can hardly say that it would reduce their 'control of the council as every councillor but one would be theirs. Some consideration for the ratepayer is timely. Rejection of this will hit hard next year at the local elections as people are fed up with rates. —Yours, etc., COMMON SENSE. May 4, 1961.
Sir,—Mrs McCreanor suggests that Mr Macfarlane should be elected to the vacancy on the City Council. If Mrs McCreanor has such a great sense of fair-minded-ness, as she suggests, would it not be fair to the citizens of Christchurch to have the opportunity to vote for or against the candidate nominated by tlie Citizens’ Association? Mrs McCreanor has certainly nominated her candidate, who will put in half his time in Wellington, so please allow the Citizens’ Association to nominate their candidate. —Yours, etc., FAIR-MINDED. May 2, 1961.
