FINE YOUNG FORWARD

A forward who has already made an impression in senior Rugby and looks a definite prospect for the Canterbury team is the young University lock. A. J. Stewart. Although he is only 20, Stewart has already had one full season of representative Rugby. Last year he played for South Canterbury and was nominated for the So'uth Island team. Six feet four inches in height and weighing more than 14 stone, Stewart is a very good line-out forward, but also has shown up in other aspects of forward play. He is fast and determined and against Albion was one of the best of the University forwards in shortpassing movements. In 1959 Stewart played for the University under 20 team, so ‘this is only his second year of senior Rugby and he still has something to learn about forward play. However, judging from his games for University this season, Stewart could well be one of the outstanding players in Canterbury by the end of the season.
