PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
There now seems to be every prospect of B. L. Clegg (Waitikiri) fulfilling his early golfing promise. Clegg was highly regarded as a junior, but since leaving those ranks his golf has been marred' by periods of inconsistency and lapses of form. This season he has been consistently successful and his victory with R. E. Clements in the Canterbury foursomes last week-end was extremely popular, as it was his first senior Canterbury title. Clegg was named as reserve for this year's Canterbury Freyberg Rosebowl team and must have gone very close to selection. Still young, he seems certain to play in this tournament in the next year or two.
A. J. Soper, a 1957 All Black forward, returned home to Southland this week after a 10-month overseas trip, and it is expected that he will turn out for his club, Country Pirates, today. The sturdy No. 8 could well make a renewed bid for national honours this season. He was in the final running for the South African tour last year.
Because he wanted to rest an injured leg, the Canterbury front row prop. B. R. Mann, did not play in the first half against Belfast last week, but he came on as a replacement at the beginning of the second spell.
His presence made a noticeable difference to the Marist scrum. It tightened its play and drove through with commendable vigour, especially in the last 20 minutes. Much of the transformation was due to Mann's efforts. ★ ■
An outstanding performance in the first round of inter-club A grade table tennis this week was that given by H. P. Holt in -winning his three singles matches against higher-rated opposition. The left-handed • Holt has been on the fringe of the top bracket in Canterbury for two seasons. He played for Canterbury against North Otago last season, and in the provincial B team against South Canterbury.
