VOTING OF ABORIGINES
Amendment Defeated
(NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 3. The Federal Government defeated by 57 votes to 39 an Opposition move to give aborigines full voting rights in Federal elections. The Opposition moved an amendment to the Commonwealth Electoral Bill in the House of Representatives. The bill makes minor amendments to the Commonwealth Electoral Act which provides that aborigines cannot vote unless they are entitled to vote in their own States or have served in the defence forces. The Opposition moved that the section defining aborigines’ voting rights be omitted. giving them equal rights with other voters. Opposing the amendment, the Minister for Territories (Mr Hasluck) said aborigines could not be given unrestricted voting rights until several problems had been carefully examined by a select committee appointed to inquire into the, matter. The committee had been appointed to examine these problems and recommend reforms which would suit the conditions of the people.
