SHORTAGE OF LABOUR

Fears Of Effects On Wellington

(N.Z. Press Association) W’ELLINGTON, May 5. The labour position in Wellington was so critical that the capital was in danger of becoming a dying city, said the Wellington Manufacturers' Association and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in a joint statement today. It was disturbing to hear around the country that Wellington was becoming a dying city industrially, said the statement, which asked what the Mayor of Wellington and city councillors were doing to meet the problem. The statement said the two organisations had devoted considerable energy to organising a successful Wellington housing and development conference in March. This conference, the statement said, emphasised Wellington city's main problems as an acute lack of labour, an equally acute lack of housing and accommodation of all types. It provided leads as to where the practical solution to those problems might lie. “We have done our part,” the statement said. “It is now up to the city council to take immediate and direct action to correct the situation disclosed at the conference.”
